In 2012, reports were filed for 134 coal-mining operations, including five mines with their own coal-washing facilities. Coal production was reported from 61 of these operations. Reports also were filed for nine separate coal-washing plants and associated facilities. Of the 523 industrial-mineral-mining operations known to be operating in 2012, a reported 337 operations were active. A total of 26 mines reported production of multiple mineral commodities. There were 538 new wells completed for oil and gas in 2012, of which 505 were productive and 33 were dry.
The total value of coal was $1,182,184,498; the value of oil and gas was $706,052,337; and the total value of all nonfuel industrial minerals was $870,367,049 in 2012.†
